WSC Law & Justice Advisory
WomenSpirit Coalitions Law & Justice Advisory Committee is meeting and discussing challenges and emerging issues that impact victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and dating violence, primarily within the tribal legal system. Tribes are invited to send representatives from frontline workers to Law enforcement, and Justice arenas. We identify resources, best practices, and policy gaps for tribal governments to address, enhance practices that ensure safety and promote accountability by tribal, state, local, and federal authorities. With a focus on law enforcement, investigation, prosecution and tribal courts. The Advisory Committee meets two times per year; the next meeting is scheduled for February 26, 2014 from 10-3.
At the next meeting the topics will be the Inter Tribal Working Group (ITWG) for VAWA 2013 pilot programs, and the WSC 2014 Sexual Assault Summit. The reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) 2013 restores the rights of tribal communities to have jurisdiction over non-Native perpetrators of sexual assault and domestic violence crimes against Native women, children, and men that occur on Tribal lands/reservations. This represents a major advance for public safety in Indian Country.
Meeting Location: 525 NW Columbia Street Suite #202, Olympia WA 98501
