Washington State Native American Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault
PO Box 13260
Olympia WA 98508
Dear Tribal Community Members;
WomenSpirit Coalition, along with many other victim service organizations, suffered critical cuts in funding in FY2010. This deficit has left WSC seeking additional operating costs to cover this gap in order to cover expenses. Please consider donating to WSC.
WomenSpirit Coalition Mission Statement:
Eliminating Violence Against Native Women and Promoting the Well-Being of Native Families and Communities.
WomenSpirit Coalition (WSC) was founded in 2002 and is located in the Olympia WA., capital area. WSC is one of 22 Tribal Coalitions nationwide providing a voice for Native women, their families, and communities suffering from epidemic rates of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking. WSC is founded, organized, and staffed by Native women. The Board of Directors is comprised of Native women.
Since 2002, the goal of the organization has been to support Native programs and staff in the work they do to eliminate violence against Native people. WomenSpirit staff works with 33 Tribes, in the State of Washington.
WomenSpirit Coalition’s scope of work and primary services include providing program technical assistance, consultation, and training. We provide assistance with program development, proposal review, culturally- based violence prevention and intervention practices, and models of advocacy specific to tribal communities. WSC provides training on a National level, as well.
- One in three Indian women will suffer sexual violence in their lifetimes and one in four boys will be victimized.
- WomenSpirit Coalition convenes the Regional Tribal Program Networking meetings and the Tribal Law and Justice Advisory Committee (LJAC), both promoting the voices of Native survivors and Advocates.
- Washington State Native American Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, WomenSpirit Coalition (WSC) trained in a majority of the Tribal communities in Washington State in 2011. The training provided is culture- specific and tribally appropriate. Victim and offender dynamics, field overview, impacts, services, best practices, tribal strategy development, victim challenges, support group approaches, community involvement / coordination are included in domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and dating violence issues related training.
- Native American and Alaskan Native women experience the highest rate of violence of any other racial or ethnic group in the United States. A report released by the Department of Justice, American Indians and Crime, found that Native American women suffer violent crime at a rate three and a half times greater than the national average.[1]
- Native American and Alaskan Native women are more than 2.5 times more likely to be raped or sexually assaulted than women in the United States in general.
- Native women have highest rate of multiple rapes and assaults, too. National researchers estimate that this number is actually much higher than has been captured by statistics; according to the Department of Justice over 70% of sexual assaults are never reported. Eighty-six per cent of reports by Native survivors report that the perpetrators are non-Native.[2]
We need your help to continue our critical work to eliminate violence against Native women and to ensure safe tribal communities. Your donation is tax deductible!
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Ms. Rebecca Kaldor
